Adolescence : When it hits all fall behind — P Gajanan.

   Adolescence

Earlier this year, a web series released on Netflix named Adolescent. The theme of the movie was one of those topics that are often ignored. Basically, adolescence is an utmost sensitive period of one's life; what one gets, learns, and perceives in this period reflects on its lifespan.

Adolescence is a transitional phase from childhood to teenage, strongly characterized by hormonal changes in one's body. Because of such hormonal shifts, young minds resist adopting new changes; often, they feel ignored, disregarded and frustrated, unable to prove themselves & unheard. And those who try to make them disciplined, they conceive them as their enemies.

This is a phase in which proper parenting along with Schooling is mandatory for shaping children's life. Parents should understand that the behavioral changes they are witnessing are controlled by hormones. Sometimes, a child starts to develop the feeling that the entire world is their enemy. They feel not getting understood, that no one understands their feelings, that no one truly cares for them, no one truly loves them, and even starts to perceive all smiles are evil and fake.

We need to understand their needs. Even at schools teachers should be more supportive to understand the Emotional needs of childs, because in the world of child school is second home so what they will get at school they immediately internalize it.

      Feeling of Desiderium.

And we are witnessing the fully advanced era of internet where one can get whatever they want at a minute away. And we have to keep in mind that the case is not always positive. There is a lot of toxicity on internet which is often fostered by careless parents, yes it is. Ie. If child doesn't want to eat food give him a bribe of touch phone, he doesn't want to sleep play a twinkle twinkle little star on mobile instead of traditional lullaby — whose origin found in ancient scriptures also —, if he doesn't want to study give him a bribe of, " If You score 95% in exam we will gift you a brand new smartphone on your birthday". By doing this things parents are infusing a modern day virus in their loved ones. The online content and the exposure which a child gets in today's time greatly impact on the thinking pattern of the child. The amount of toxicity, Adult-oriented contents, constant comparison of life, and the inability to discern between reel and real life due to social media is consuming a lot of time and leaving negative impacts on little and innocent minds.

Bad parenting and toxic habits of parents which are also a part of major causes for negative behavioral changes — constant fights , unfavorable atmosphere in the house , unavailability of parents, sudden loss of loved ones creates emotional instability in the mind of child.

    Animal movie 2023

The movies which are made today, which glorify the radical characters like in the Animal movie and Kabir singh. Where violence & toxicity are normalized. And also, today's youth is often following the exact things or a modified version of it in real life. I.e., by making shorts in which  a male character casually strikes a female peer and showing it as a cool thing, creating memes on scooty driving skills of women, etc.

This Portrays a distorted image, and often youth try to imitate such things, but little do they know about it's ramifications, These actions can have adverse consequences on their behavior which might spoil their relationship with other people.

And why it's a most crucial phase of one's life: after this transitional phase, one's life completely turns around. They are expected to be wiser, more aware, more conscious, and more social. Those who can't cope with these expected standards by societal norms start experiencing loneliness, A sense of lacking something vital and emptiness. Even the earlier body says goodbye by acquiring new traits, like in the males, voice gets deeper, they start to develop masculine traits, and the emergence of wisdom teeth (although the arrival of wisdom is a question yet to be answered) occurs. Things don't remain same for the child, whether it is a boy or a girl.

And things become even more critical for girl children, especially in backward areas. As hormonal changes lead to the development of feminine traits like a softer voice, nurturance, sensitivity, and mood swings. If we look at rural parts of India, things get more complex and critical because of parental pressure and social norms. The child is expected to confine themselves within their own gender. Parents start planning about the child's marriage; they start counting days in a reverse manner. Due to sudden changes from "ghar ki lakshmi" to "paraye ka dhan," the child literally feels like it is suffering in the hell. The same applies to boy children also, and sometimes it gets worse for them than girl children, not often they have tools to express their feelings, ideas, and emotions with others, many a times even with their parents. (That could be a reason for friendship between boys lasts longer.)

   As far as near

So, the question arises:— what should we do in this period to nurture today's adolescents and tomorrow's leaders, and to create a healthier world? I urge the Indian government to focus on providing not only physical health infrastructure but also mental health or counseling facilities, especially in rural areas, because what a children experience in this period reflects on their character. And I would like to request policy makers, administrators & management of schooling systems to conduct lectures and seminars on this sensitive topic, to assure that no one should feel empty in this crowded world.

Consider this: A startling 1 in 4 Indian adolescents (aged 13-15) battle depression, often rooted in loneliness ( Things are even worse if we analyse data About adults ). Across the nation, 8 to 11 million young minds (13-17 years) urgently need mental healthcare, yet these vital conversations remain shrouded in silence. This isn't just about sadness; the WHO warns that social isolation, rampant among our youth (with up to 62% reporting loneliness in some areas!), carries mortality risks comparable to smoking or obesity.

Also peer pressure which child goes through. Often boys are told to be tough and harsh to themselves - "mard ko kabhi dard nahi hota" but let's appreciate them crying and being expressive this will really help them speak out things which might affect their mental health. This will increase their Emotional quotient. And some time addressing depression just only needs a good listener who can just listen without judging and intervening.

Also in rural areas girls are often told to be soft, innocent & the one who will be always ready to sacrifice their own feelings to others, let's encourage them to be bold and independent, we belong to the country where Rani manikarnika, Rajmata jijabai, Punyashlok Ahilyabai holkar, Rani Durgavati were born, Leaders who bravely faced foes to fulfill their responsibilities to the kingdom.

We're not just shaping individuals; we're shaping the future. So, It's crucial for a country of India's eminence that every citizen and child should be healthier, not only in terms of physical health but also on the scale of mental health, if we really want to get closer to the target of Viksit Bharat @ 2047.
