The Malnutrition : When The food is scarce women and girls eat least and last, but why???? — P Gajanan

On 26th May, the BJP-led NDA government completed 11 years in the office. Which remains unprecedented in its actions, vision, and commitment toward building a Viksit Bharat (Developed India) by 2047. Over these years, India has transformed from a country once considered to have only potential, into a nation that the world now sees as a strong alternative to China. According to a recent report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), India has overtaken Japan to become the world’s third-largest economy, with a GDP estimated at $4.19 trillion.

Although the Modi government was alleged on the basis of demonetisation, Manipur violence, democratic backsliding, and unemployment, whether one supports Prime Minister Modi or not, it is evident that his leadership has touched every citizen — from small business owners and farmers to working professionals and students. His focus on inclusive welfare schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, New Education Policy, Atal Pension Yojana, and Ayushman Bharat has brought significant change across sectors.

If the Modi-led government continues to manage key challenges effectively — including inflation and unemployment — it could indeed mark a major milestone in Its tenure.

Concerns Amid Progress: Hunger and Malnutrition

Despite these achievements, serious issues remain. One of the most pressing is hunger. According to the Global Hunger Index (GHI) published by "Concern Worldwide" and "Welthungerhilfe", India ranks near the bottom — 111 out of 125 countries — with around 19.7% of the population undernourished. Still, after 75 years of independence, 74% of the population is struggling to avail nutritious food. A significant proportion of these are children and women. And there is some nonsense ritual in society that women will always eat least and last. But why????

Since pregnant and lactating women are responsible for a child's overall growth and nourishment, there should be proper care and sufficiency of nutritional value for them. And in some reports, women who are not engaged in economic work often lack the basic needs of life. And it is also seen that when a woman is the earning person, her children's and her own nutritional needs are fulfilled. On one hand, we consider women as the Annapurna of the house, but we often forget about their own nutritional needs. And the same applies to children who are in their growing age, lacking the required diet.

This Paradoxical Situation: I agree that we are moving towards becoming a developed country, but still, a large portion of our population struggles to afford healthy food. Hunger is not just a result of food shortage but also food wastage, poverty, degrading soil fertility due to excessive use of chemicals, and even a lack of empathy in society.

It's important to note that sometimes, resolving hunger doesn't require money — just responsibility and love. Feeding someone or preventing malnutrition is not just a duty; it is an act of humanity. As there are many examples of this, such as Golden Temple Amritsar, TTD Prasadalayam, Jagannath Puri Temple, and Shri Takht Sachkhand Sahib, where duties are being performed in the love of God and humanity.

A Call to Action :

I humbly urge this unprecedented government of India to prioritize the fight against hunger. Article 21 of our Constitution guarantees the right to life, and that includes the right to live with dignity, free from hunger. I don't want to request excessive free rationing, free cylinders other than Ujjwala, or the establishment of free community kitchens. What I want is a system in which those who are willing to end their hunger on their own should be supported. I personally believe that providing additional grants and other stuff will only end one-time hunger, but providing a system will end hunger till the end of life or willingness to end.

If we truly want to be seen as a developed nation, we must ensure that no citizen goes to bed hungry. Let us work toward a future where India not only ranks higher in global economic reports but also in human development indices like the Global Hunger Index. I eagerly look forward to seeing a better, more nourished, and stronger India in the years to come.
